Spider Goats

Spider Goats

A farm at Utah State University is breeding goats that even Spiderman would envy.

The goats at the farm have been named Spider Goats because their milk produces a protein that, once extracted, can be turned into a material as strong as a spider’s web.

The goats have been genetically modified with the silk-making gene from the golden orb weaver spider.

Once the protein is taken from the goat milk, it can be turned into adhesives. Some researchers believe it can also be used to make artificial ligaments for people who’ve suffered severe injuries.

The researchers use goats because spiders are very territorial and will eventually kill one another, making the silk harder to harvest.
