The Dairy Production Medicine (DPM) Certificate Program VII

May 27, 2014

The Penn State Veterinary Extension group will be offering the next edition of the Dairy Production Medicine (DPM) Certificate Program for veterinarians this fall, 2014.

Participating veterinarians will gain valuable practical skills and knowledge that will enable them to increase productivity and improve health of their client’s herds, as well as increase the value of their practice’s consulting services. Guest speakers will include outstanding faculty members and leading practitioners from around the country.  This version of the long standing DPM program will feature a small set of core modules coupled with a selection of elective modules.  It is expected that DPM enrollees attend all of these core modules.

To make the program more relevant to participants, individuals can customize the remaining four modules to best fit their needs.  These “elective” modules can be selected to allow the participants to specialize in a chosen area (i.e., nutrition, mastitis, reproduction, records) thus providing additional flexibility to customize their educational program.  Veterinarians can maintain a focus in dairy, or subspecialty within dairy, or gain additional skills in preventative health fields that are applicable to other food animal species.

The Dairy Production Medicine Certificate Program is a 2.5 year course consisting of ten 3-day intensive workshops.

All modules will be held in the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center at the University Park campus in State College, PA.

First Core Module:

Focus-On Farm Problem Solving: Evidence Based Medicine, Epidemiology Made Easy, and On-Farm Clinical Trials

Second Core Module:

Focus-Nutrition I: Forage Quality and Testing, Ration Design and computer applications, Trouble Shooting Forage Problems, Feeding Management

Third Core Module:

Focus-Understanding and Using Records:  Cost of Production, Smarter Financial Decisions.
Other modules will follow:

  • Dairy Nutrition II
  • Mastitis II*
  • Reproduction I*
  • Reproduction and Records II
  • Infectious Disease & Diagnostic Decisions*
  • Dairy Nutrition III and Financial Review

Course outlines and general topics are available for each module at this time.  Final details and confirmed speakers will be available approximately six months ahead of the scheduled date.  Other topics and allied continuing education programs for large animal practitioners will be offered and advertised as stand-alone or complementary elective modules.

Fees:

The cost for 10 modules to complete the certificate program is $4000. This may be paid in installments.  DPM enrollees who wish to attend any program sponsored by Penn State Veterinary Extension beyond the 10 modules can do so at a 30% reduction in fees.  DPM certificate program alumni can attend any of the DPM modules at a 25% reduction in fees.
