Rain Slowing Down Harvest Of Peas

Aug 16, 2016
Rain has slowed harvest activities in many areas.

Dennis Lange is an Industry Development Specialist for Pulses, with Manitoba Agriculture.

He says ideally growers want to harvest their peas are at 16%-17% moisture, when plants are looking brown and mature.

When harvesting peas, Lange says producers may want to choose a flex header.

"The flex heeder will allow you to float along the soil surface and follow the contour of the ground, allowing you to cut the peas nice and low. You also want to move your adjustments accordingly so that you are not pulling any soil into the combine, that is really important," he said.

Lange says producers should maintain a good groundspeed, while trying not to have the reel speed moving too fast, so as to reduce losses from shattering.
