Premier Brad Wall Monitors Pulse Crop Trade Dispute With India

Mar 02, 2017

Premier Brad Wall is keeping close tabs on a pulse trade issue with Canada’s biggest customer.

At the end of March, India will end an exemption for the fumigation of Canadian peas and lentils.

The fumigation is required to kill certain insects, none of which are found in Canada.

The issue will be discussed in detail next week when Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay and officials with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency arrive in India.

Wall says peas and lentils are very important crops for provincial growers.

He wants to see a long-term solution and says the province must remain pro-active to ensure trade continues with India.

Saskatchewan has sent a letter to India’s high commissioner in Ottawa.
