Farmer Survey for New Web-Based Tool

Why do we need your input? More frequent and severe droughts, hurricanes, forest fires, and rainfall events due to climate change are increasingly threatening the livelihoods of agricultural producers in North Carolina. To aid agricultural producers and decision makers as they prepare for and adapt to these events, the NC State Climate Office (NCSCO) and NC State Extension are partnering to develop a “Future-Ready Farmer’s Almanac”.

The Future-Ready Farmer’s Almanac will incorporate state-of-the-art weather and climate change datasets and leverage NCSCO and NC State Extension expertise. Importantly, the Future-Ready Farmer’s Almanac will present relevant information to agricultural producers and decision makers in an appealing, interactive way (e.g., in a web-based dashboard).

Participants in this research study will inform the development of the Future-Ready Farmer’s Almanac, ensuring that it will meet user data needs and display preferences.

You must be 18 years of age or older, reside in the United States, and be an agricultural producer, agricultural advisor, Extension agent or area specialist, natural resources manager, planner, or floodplain specialist, member of commodity association(s), member of growers’ association(s), or otherwise be a professional within an agricultural field to participate in this study.

How will we carry out this study?

This study will be conducted in two phases. Phase 1 will consist of a survey of potential Future-Ready Farmer’s Almanac users to develop a general understanding of their climate information needs. Phase 2 will consist of one-on-one semi-structured interviews designed to help us gain a deeper understanding of the needs and priorities of potential users.
