Canada's Pulse Industry Pleased With India Export Extension

Mar 31, 2017

Pulse Canada CEO Gordon Bacon is praising the Canadian government for its hard work in getting a deal reached with India.

India has granted Canada a series of exemptions to an import regulation regarding mandatory fumigation of imported crops, in recognition of Canada's cold climate.

The current exemption expired Friday. India extended the fumigation derogation until June 30th.

Bacon says the three-month extension is good news, although there is more work that needs to be done.

"It's the shortest extension of a derogation that we've got since 2004, and I think it just emphasizes that we need to get some long-term decisions in place so that we can be ready to put new crop pulses into India if market values in India make that something that both farmers and Canadian exporters want to do."
