Eligible Arkansas farmers and farmers markets can sign up June 5 to become authorized to handle Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, transactions.
Accepting SNAP at farmers markets helps low-income families to buy locally grown fresh products, while supporting state farmers and farmers markets. Those interested in SNAP authorization are asked to answer pre-qualifying questions before the sign up day by logging on to www.nafmnp.org/marketlink.
The Arkansas Department of Human Services and the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service are facilitating the one-day sign up sponsored by USDA-Food and Nutrition Services, and the National Association of Farmers Markets. The sign up will be held at the state headquarters of the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, 2301 S. University Ave., from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
“This program not only helps SNAP participants access fresh, healthy foods, it also provides an alternative revenue stream for farmers markets, which can help make the market more viable for farmers and the community,” said Rosemary Rodibaugh, a nutrition professor for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.
“A growing number of farmers markets are redeeming SNAP benefits,” she said.
Qualified farmers markets and farmers who choose to work with MarketLink will receive a new iPhone, data services, card reader and other equipment needed to process EBT, debit or credit card transactions.
