$603K in USDA grants to boost South Carolina’s specialty crop sector

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded $603,000 in August to support South Carolina's specialty crop industry through the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.

Managed by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture, this funding aims to improve the market, education, and research for local specialty crops, which include fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, and ornamental plants.

The Specialty Crop Block Grant Program supports South Carolina’s agricultural economy by backing initiatives that directly benefit farmers. “Each year, we find new ways to use the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program to help South Carolina farmers thrive,” said South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers. “These grants encourage growers to expand their markets, take informed risks, and grow more local crops. Supporting farmers is what it’s all about.”

This year’s grants are allocated to several key projects, including -

  • South Carolina Cut Flower Growers Marketing Co-op - Developing an online marketplace and logistics system to streamline flower sales across the state.

  • Chickpea Study - South Carolina State University will explore chickpeas as a fall cover crop and spring cash crop option.

  • Clemson University Projects - Researchers are working on disease management in brassica crops, improving peach tree resilience, optimizing strawberry fungicide use, and building a pricing tool for farmers.

  • AI in Agriculture - Advent Innovations Limited will design an AI-based platform to monitor crop and soil health, prevent crop loss, and predict yields.

  • Honey Research on Flowers - Elgie Deberry Apiaries will study flower selection with honey samples to enhance pollination understanding.

These projects highlight the potential for research and innovative technologies to boost South Carolina’s agriculture.
