Farmers were rem inded this week winter still has a grip on the weather with severe cold temperatures late in the week . Hay s upplies are good , but demand remains moderate to light at most auctions . Overall hay prices increased considerably this week . Demand for quality alfalfa hay increased the overall hay price this week compared to last week. Summing up the sales t his week, quality hay sold for a good price and lower quality alfalfa hay prices held steady at auctions .

For Nebraska , compared to the last report alfalfa hay sold full y steady to stronger . D emand picked up thi s week for “ dairy quality ” and “grindin g type” hay .

For Iowa , buyer inquiry w as moderate to good with a strong market for premium quality alfalfa hay .

In South Dakota , light reported trade volume this week w ith steady prices . D airy quality alfalfa hay is in demand with a tight supply . Lower quality hay is in an abundant supply.

For Missouri , many farmers were thinking of spring green up until a mid - week drop to single digit temperature s reminded them winter isn ’ t over yet . Unlike past years many farms have good hay supplies resulting in a light demand for hay at auction, but prices have been steady. Quality hay will demand a good price.

In Southwest Minnesota , no premium quality or good quality hay was available at auction . L ower quality hay sold at steady prices when compared to the last report .

For Illinois , demand was good to moderate with moderate to heavy hay offerings and steady prices.

In Wisconsin, hay prices were steady for good quality alfalfa hay . S traw pric es in the Midwest were steady to slightly weaker , compared to last week. S mall square bales ave raged $ 3 . 2 0 per bale (range of $ 1 . 0 0 to $ 6 .00 ); large square bales averaged $28.40 per bale (range of $ 19 .00 to $ 5 0 . 6 0 ) ; and large round bale s averaged $ 3 4 . 4 0 per bale (range of $ 2 6 . 0 0 to $ 46.25 ). Large bales of straw (round or square) sold $2.00 - $4.00 less per bale compared to last week.
