Saskatchewan dairy farm fined in worker's death

Mar 02, 2022

A dairy farm pleaded guilty last month to one charge under Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

The charge relates to the November 2020 death of one of its employees.

Jimlee Farms Ltd at Summerberry pleaded guilty to being an employer, failing to provide an effective safeguard where a worker may contact a dangerous moving part of a machine, resulting in the death of a worker.

The charges relate to the death of  34-year-old Jesus Heinar Zavala Guevara, a temporary foreign worker from Mexico, who had been working on the farm since June.

Guevara was feeding cattle on November 19th when the accident occurred.

He was putting grain through a grain mill when his clothing became snagged by an unguarded PTO shaft resulting in his death.

Jimlee Farms Ltd has been ordered to pay a fine of $80,000.
