Royal Manitoba Winter Fair Remains True To Its Roots

The 111th edition of the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair is underway this week at Brandon's Keystone Centre.

Some of the highlights this year include the Birds of Prey exhibition, horse jumping, and of course, the SuperDogs show.

Provincial Ex General Manager Ron Kristjansson says the fair will feature a large agricultural component.

"The origins of the Provincial Exhibition and the [Royal Manitoba] Winter Fair was as a agriculture society and that's what we still are. We've added all the entertainment pieces...but the ag competitions and the ag education becomes a bigger piece of it as we go on."

He notes this year's cattle show will feature over a hundred head of cattle, noting numbers have gone up the past couple of years.

Kristjansson says the fair is a great opportunity for farmers to share their story.

"We work with all the commodity groups and lots of farmers to get the message out to the urban population. We're a direct link. We bring the farm to town for a week and people really want to know where their food comes from and we provide them a great opportunity to learn first hand how it's really done from the people that do it. We get a chance to get the facts out to them first."
