Summer sustainability program officer
Duration: May- August (full time, 14 weeks)
The Summer sustainability program officer is responsible for supporting activities across the organization, including formulating milestones and a continuous improvement plan for the industry’s sustainability efforts as well as the planning and execution of the organization’s Annual General Meeting. As part of an integrated team, the role also includes supporting communications, market access, member relations and government relations activities. The role is based in Ottawa at Grains Headquarters where 6 national grain organizations are co-located.
Reporting to the Executive Director, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Researching and drafting a sustainability plan for the soybean industry that establishes milestones for progress as part of a continuous improvement plan for Sustainable Canadian Soy – the industry’s national verified sustainability program.
- Working as part of a team to plan and execute the annual general meeting that brings together Canada’s soybean value chain. This will involve participating in the meeting that involves dozens of agricultural leaders.
- Supporting Soy Canada’s efforts on industry priorities related to industry leadership, market access, market development and research coordination. This includes identifying and researching issues, preparing responses to information requests on soybean issues, answering written and oral inquiries and participating in member engagement on challenges and opportunities facing the industry.
The skills, experience and qualifications you need:
- Interest and understanding in sustainability, government policy, agriculture, and the soybean industry.
- Self-starter, highly motivated and able to show initiative.
- Ability to respectfully interact with members such as grower organization staff and grower leaders, as well as other stakeholders such as those in the environmental community.
- Strong research and writing skills to adapt complex information into concise reports and bulletins.
- Highly organized: ability to plan, organize and manage projects / issues.
- Good communication skills – good judgement, listening and well spoken, with a collaborative approach.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse membership.
- Proven ability to be flexible, with the ability to keep pace with fast–paced work environment.
- Post-secondary education in environmental policy, political science, public affairs, business, agri-business, agriculture, international business, and / or related areas.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and social media.
- Ability to travel domestically to member events.
- Meet eligibility requirements of the Canada Summer Jobs program.
