Farm leader shares story of resilience and giving

The harvest season marks a special time for the agriculture community, as months of hard work in the field culminate in bringing crops home.  It is a difficult year for many in the farming community, but nonetheless, farmers help out any way they can.

One of the ways Ryley Richards gives back is through Growing for STARS, an initiative where farmers donate crop proceeds to help fund critical emergency care. The program, inspired by a family who donated soybean proceeds, reflects how agriculture can contribute beyond food production. Ryley and his family joined the effort after an accident in 2021, viewing it as both a donation and an investment in rural safety.

“In relation to STARS, this is an investment in our safety. When we need it, if we need it or if our neighbour needs it — it’s there,” said Ryley. “Giving to STARS is not only a donation, but also an investment in our future.”

Richards is not only a farm leader, he is also a STARS Very Important Patient (VIP), whose personal story has made him a strong supporter of the organization.

In 2021, Ryley was severely injured in a snowmobile accident while at Duck Mountain Provincial Park. With a broken femur and a shattered wrist, he was rescued thanks to quick action from friends, local responders, and STARS air ambulance. “As I collected myself, I was laying on my back, looking up to the sky and the first thought in my mind was ‘STARS could come get me,’” Ryley recalled.

Today, Ryley serves as Managing Partner at Richards Farms Ventures, preparing with his crew for a busy harvest using large-scale equipment, from combines to trailers. Despite the challenges of farming, he remains committed to both his land and his community.

The agriculture community’s support ensures STARS continues to serve rural areas when help is needed most. As fields fill with combines this harvest, farmers like Ryley remind us that the season is not only about crops but also about care, community, and gratitude.
