NFU highlights key issues for agriculture in transition

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has reached out to government with a set of strategic priorities intended to support family farmers and enhance the sustainability of U.S. agriculture.

As administration begins its transition, NFU President Rob Larew calls for focused leadership on several key issues affecting rural America.

Top of the NFU’s agenda is strengthening the farm safety net, which is crucial for helping family farmers cope with potential economic hardships expected in 2025.

Larew emphasizes, "The safety net established in the 2018 Farm Bill will not be sufficient to help farmers withstand rapidly declining crop prices, high interest rates, and natural disasters."

NFU advocates for rigorous enforcement of antitrust laws to foster competitive markets, which are vital for the health of the agricultural sector. The union also stresses the importance of measured trade policies to prevent adverse effects on farmers' livelihoods and the broader economy.

NFU’s letter also touches on the need for a fair tax code, right-to-repair laws, and accessible healthcare for rural communities, as well as ensuring a stable workforce for agriculture.

These initiatives are aimed at creating a resilient agricultural system that can support family farms and contribute to their communities' prosperity under government presidency.
