Experimental Farm

On Feb. 26, 1886, Governor General Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice (pictured above) delivered the throne speech to open the fourth session of Canada’s fifth Parliament with Sir John. A. Macdonald serving as prime minister.

In the speech, the governor general announced a bill would be put before the government for the establishment of an experimental farm.

The government would establish five experimental farms in the following years – the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa, the Brandon Research Station in Manitoba, the Agassiz Experimental Farm in B.C., the Nappan Experimental Farm in Nova Scotia and the Dominion Experimental Farm in Indian Head, Sask.
