On Jan. 26, 1949, Governor General Harold Alexander (pictured) delivered a throne speech on behalf of Prime Minister Louis Saint Laurent to begin the fifth session of Canada’s Parliament.

The government sought to increase its ag trade, and its representatives were asked “to make the further legislative provision necessary to implement the agreements for the sale of agricultural products to the United Kingdom,” Governor General Alexander said.

In addition, the government planned to revise many pieces of legislation, including the Prairie Farm Assistance Act.
