Video: Assessing Field Pea Nodulation

Field pea root nodules can form as early as 14 days after emergence. However, proper nodulation assessment should take place from the 6th to 9th node stages or at R1 (flower bud) to capture peak nodulation. In this video, we're rating peas at the V10, or 10th node stage. Pea nodules are globular and branch as they grow, compared to soybean nodules. This branching makes pea nodules more difficult to count than other types of root nodules. That's why we use a rating system instead.
