Patience Needed For Canola

Growers should be patient when it comes to seeding canola according to the Canola Council of Canada.

"I know it sounds like we're harping, but patience is key. You only get one chance to get the crop in the ground, so don't try to mud it in and do it quickly," says Kristen Phillips, agronomist with the CCC. "You normally don't see a yield decrease until you get into the latter part of May. So if you're sowing between the 7th and the 21st, that's an ideal time for putting canola in the ground."

With the pressure to get the crop seeded, she cautions producers against driving too fast while planting.

She says producers should also consider bumping up seeding rates and phosphorous amounts.

"Especially with the conditions that we're having, it's a good idea to give the crop that increased phosphorous just to give it that jump out of the ground to get it up and growing," she says.
