Wisconsin Soybean Board Advocates for Enhanced Great Lakes Shipping Infrastructure

Mar 28, 2023

The Wisconsin Soybean Board is urging government officials and industry leaders to invest in improving the Great Lakes shipping infrastructure to support the transportation of soybeans and other agricultural products. The board believes that enhancing shipping capacity and efficiency will benefit farmers, processors, and consumers by reducing transportation costs and increasing sustainability.

Currently, the Great Lakes shipping industry faces several challenges, including outdated locks and channels, inadequate funding, and a shortage of trained personnel. These factors contribute to longer wait times, higher costs, and increased environmental impacts for agricultural transportation. The Wisconsin Soybean Board is advocating for investments in modernizing and expanding the infrastructure to address these issues.

Upgrades to the Great Lakes shipping infrastructure could result in significant economic benefits for the agricultural sector, as well as for the broader regional and national economies. By reducing transportation costs, farmers could see increased profits, which could, in turn, support further investment in sustainable agricultural practices. Additionally, improvements to shipping infrastructure could promote more efficient and environmentally-friendly transportation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other negative environmental impacts.

The Wisconsin Soybean Board is calling for increased investment in modernizing and expanding the Great Lakes shipping infrastructure to support the efficient and sustainable transportation of agricultural products. Such investments could have significant economic and environmental benefits, benefiting farmers, processors, and consumers alike.
