Hard Red Winter
The 2014 HRW harvest is quickly winding down in the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado. The Texas harvest is now 95% complete, Oklahoma's harvest is 98% complete, Kansas and Colorado’s harvests are 85% completed. Rain continues to slow down the completion of harvest in some areas.
Overall test weights in many areas of central and southern Kansas have dropped over the last few weeks from 60 lb/bu – 62 lb/bu (78.9 kg/hl – 81.5 kg/hl) now to 55 lb/bu – 57 lb/bu (72.5 kg/hl – 75.1 kg/hl). The central areas of western Kansas have been hit hard by hail storms reducing yields to 15 bu/ac - 20 bu/ac (1.0 – 1.3 tons/ha). Northern Kansas yields have been averaging between 50 bu/ac (3.4 tons/ha) to 60 lb/bu (77.6 kg/hl – 78.9 kg/hl). Protein averages are between 13.0% (14.7 % dry basis) to 13.5% (15.3% dry basis).
Colorado has suffered more losses in yield due to hail storms than rain, and precipitation continues to affect harvest progress. General overall reports indicate higher yields, good test weights and very good protein as harvest progresses northward.
As of July 10, 55 new samples have been collected but have not yet been analyzed, the data will be included in this week's report.
Soft Red Winter
The 2014 SRW harvest showed significant progress this past week. Although not all of the testing has been completed, sampling has concluded in Arkansas, Kentucky, Illinois, North Carolina and Virginia. The final samples from Maryland and Missouri should be analyzed and included in next week's report. Harvesting has progressed to northern Ohio and Indiana, and samples are being collected in these areas this week.
This week's analysis of an additional 88 samples did little to alter the overall averages. The grade factors include only samples from Arkansas and North Carolina. Low test weight averages in those areas continue to influence the overall grade to this point. Cumulative protein, dockage and falling number values are tracking very well compared to last year’s final numbers (9.8% protein, 0.5% dockage and 294 falling number value).
Average test weight and thousand kernel weight are lagging behind 2013 final data of 58 lb/bu TW (76.4 kg/hl) and 33.5 grams TKW. Preliminary laboratory milling data from Arkansas samples indicates a higher milling yield this year, farinograph data is slightly higher in absorption, and baking data is unchanged compared to 2013.
