Scout Hay For Armyworms Until First Frost

Aug 27, 2014

Fall armyworm infestations have been reported in 49 of 67 counties in Alabama, says Kathy Flanders, entomologist with the Auburn University Cooperative Extension. She expects outbreaks to continue for some time and urges growers to continue to scout fields for the pest.

“Keep checking your grass forages for fall armyworm until first frost,” she says. “I expect more armyworm problems will be discovered as another generation matures.”

In years with extreme infestations – like this year –generations of fall armyworms overlap. When this occurs, caterpillars of all sizes can be found in affected fields.
