Saskatchewan Farm Survey Shows Key Issues Are Trade And Market Access

A farm survey in Saskatchewan shows trade and market access are key issues facing producers.

Agriculture minister Lyle Stewart says 75 per-cent of the respondents were farmers, with the rest from agribusiness and consumer groups.

“I guess the results weren’t surprising,” says Stewart. “But it’s very good to get them because it reinforces the direction we’ve been taking – or hoping to anyway. It kind of breaks down the opportunities and risks.”

A total of 880 submissions were made to the government between November 14th, 2016 and January 31st of 2017.

Stewart says the results of the survey showing the importance of trade and new market access will be used to help develop the next federal-provincial farm support programs.

“The opportunities are trade and access to growing markets was the highest reposnse,” says Stewart.  “Growing value-added and the processing sector was second. Innovative crop and/or livestock management was third.”
