New Wheat Varieties Discussed At PGDC Annual Meeting

Mar 25, 2015
Twenty-eight wheat lines were registered last month at the Prairie Grain Development Committee's Annual Meeting in Banff, AB.

Lisa Nemeth, technical specialist in winter wheat with the Canadian International Grains Institute (Cigi), says that number is the highest amount that's ever been registered.

She notes that improved gluten strength was one of the characteristics that customers would like to see improved in Canada Western Red Spring.

"The new varieties that are coming out will have that in their quality makeup," she said.

Nemeth adds that it can take breeders up to 10 years to develop a new variety.
