Beef cattle producers will have an opportunity in November to learn more about winter management options for their livestock.
The North Dakota State University Extension Service is hosting a Beef Cattle Winter Management workshop at four locations:
- Nov. 12 - Fireside Restaurant, Ellendale, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Central time
- Nov. 12 - American Legion, Medina, 4 to 9 p.m. Central time
- Nov. 13 - Wing Theater, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Central time
- Nov. 13 - Fairgrounds, Carson, 3 to 8 p.m. Mountain time
Topics that will be covered and the presenters are:
- What does colostrum have to do with stewardship? Building cow colostrum quality during winter feeding for healthier spring calves - Gerald Stokka, NDSU Extension livestock stewardship specialist and veterinarian
- Alternative winter feeding strategies - Mary Berg, area Extension livestock environmental management specialist, NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center
- Shelterbelts as living windbreaks - Craig Stange, Natural Resources Conservation Service
- Body condition scoring for cow herds - county Extension agents
- Feeding for energy - Chanda Engel, research specialist, Carrington Research Extension Center
- Water management - Karl Hoppe, area Extension livestock systems specialist, Carrington Research Extension Center
- Vaccine handling and storage - Lisa Pederson, NDSU Extension beef quality specialist, Bismarck
- Hay bale management - Fara Brummer, area Extension livestock systems specialist, NDSU Central Grasslands Research Extension Center
The registration fee is $15 per person if paid by Nov. 1 or $25 per person after that date. The cost for beef quality assurance certification or recertification is an additional $15 per operation. Four American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS) continuing education credits are available.
