Lawrence MacAulay Announces Package To Help Dairy Sector Adjust To Canada-EU Trade Deal

Nov 10, 2016

Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay is at the Canadian Agriculture Museum in Ottawa to announce an assistance package for the dairy sector.

The Canada-EU trade agreement that may come into force provisionally next year will allow imports to displace up to four per cent of the domestic cheese market.

The Liberal government has pledged transition assistance to help both farmers and processors adjust to the new foreign competition. CBC News is livestreaming the announcement starting at 10 a.m. ET.

The package set to be unveiled is not expected to include lump sum compensation for the industry in anticipation of lost income.

Because the domestic cheese market is growing, the government isn't certain the sector would necessarily suffer losses per se — but future growth in the market may be lost to the new imports, particularly European specialty cheeses.
