Kenney Government Will Say Goodbye to Carbon Tax and Bill 6

Apr 17, 2019

The United Conservative Party's win in the Provincial election means the carbon tax and Bill 6 are on the chopping block.

The UCP says they will repeal Bill 6 and immediately launch consultations with the ag sector to create new and improved farm safety legislation which will be called the Farm Freedom and Safety Act.

They say the new Act will require employers to maintain workplace insurance for farm workers, but allow them to choose whether to purchase insurance from the market or Workers Compensation Board (WCB).

It will also exempt small farms from employment legislation and ensure basic safety standards according to the Party's platform.

The UCP have also promised to fight back against well-funded special interest attacks on Alberta's agriculture sector, pressure the federal government to open markets, let farmers set agriculture research priorities, and review risk mitigation programs.

They also say they will cooperate with municipalities wanting to auction parcels of Crown land for agriculture use to replace land lost to urban expansion, but these actions would be subject to consultations.

You can find more of their agriculture campaign promises on their website.
