Frost Starting To Become An Issue For Later Crops

Sep 01, 2014

It may not be what farmers want to hear, but frost could start to become an issue for some of the later seeded crops.

Angela Brackenreed, agronomy specialist for Manitoba with the Canola Council of Canada, notes a killing frost happens at -2 degrees Celsius. She adds that swathing the crop is really not going to avoid the effects of frost.

Brackenreed says canola that was planted near the end of May is starting to get cut now.

"I've been hearing fairly mixed reports," she said. "I think as producers are out swathing there's been some areas of the field that are better than they expected and then some reports of seeing more drown out spots than they really realized prior to swathing."

As for diseases, Brackenreed says there is some sclerotinia here and there and also low to moderate levels of blackleg.

She adds root rot is at higher than normal levels this year.

Brackenreed says she has not found any cases of clubroot on the root, although soil tests have not yet been confirmed.
