Florida Lawmakers Push to End Fluoridation in Water

Proposed Bill Aims to Ban Fluoride in Public Water Supplies

A new bill introduced in Florida’s state legislature seeks to ban the addition of fluoride to public water supplies. The Florida Farm Bill (SB 700), filed by Senator Keith Truenow and supported by Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, addresses various agricultural and public policy concerns.

Fluoridation has become a divisive issue, with many local governments recently opting to end the practice. Rep. Kaylee Tuck is sponsoring the House version of the bill, and discussions are set for the legislative session starting March 4.

"Nobody is thirsty for unnecessary additives. Safe, clean drinking water is our chief goal. Prohibiting fluoride in public water systems ensures that individuals and families have the final say over their health," said Senator Truenow in a statement.

Health organizations strongly oppose the move, arguing that fluoride is crucial for dental health. The Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics warns that cavities remain the most common childhood disease, disproportionately affecting children in low-income communities.

Several Florida municipalities, including Ormond Beach, Stuart, and Palm Bay, have already voted to remove fluoride. Lakeland and Manatee County officials plan hearings to discuss potential fluoride bans.

The debate escalated after Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo supported fluoride removal, referencing a National Institutes of Health study linking high fluoride exposure to lower IQ in children. However, these findings were based on levels twice the recommended standard of 0.7 milligrams per liter.

As the bill moves forward, Florida lawmakers will weigh the potential risks and benefits of fluoride removal, balancing public health concerns with personal choice and state policy.
