Discussing Ontario’s Pork Production/Slaughter Imbalance

Nov 18, 2015

The imbalance between pork production and slaughter capacity in this province was one of the topics at this week’s Ontario Pork Industry Council Special Interest Meeting in Stratford.

University of Guelph professor Ken McEwan says “The imbalance between production and slaughter capacity has a huge impact on domestic price within the province of Ontario. So in a situation where you produce more than you have capacity to slaughter it means the animals have to be exported which then increases the cost. They have to be transported to another province or another country like the United States.”

McEwan also talked about the TPP – suggesting it will have a positive impact for the Canadian pork industry by providing more opportunity for exports.

About 200 people attended this week’s OPIC meeting in Stratford.
