Devine, DePauw Among Five Inducted Into AG Hall Of Fame

Nov 25, 2015
Former Saskatchewan Premier Grant Devine was one of 5 individuals inducted into the Canadian Agriculture Hall of Fame this week.

Speaking to the media at Agribition, Devine said it was a real honor to be included adding the decisions they made for agriculture back in the 80’s was a team effort.

"We based our policies around land, and for land to be productive it needs good people and you need to help people stay on the land. When we were elected, interest rates were about 20%, so we stepped in between the banks and the farmer. We said "look, we're going to limit the interest rate for you at 8.5%". That was a huge thing."

Dr. Ron DePauw, a retired wheat breeder from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s SPARC station in Swift Current, is now a member of the Canadian Agriculture Hall of Fame.

Throughout his 41 year career with AAFC Depauw and his team developed a number of significant wheat varieties including AC Barrie, AC Lillian and AC Carberry.

"It feels super special to be recognized by the ag industry for the contributions I've made over the years together with my colleagues from agriculture and agri-food Canada and many other people that have contributed to the development of new genetics at work on farmer fields."
