The Sunbelt Ag Expo held its annual Field Day on July 10, 2014. On display were many new and interesting research projects as well as many company representatives. All five cotton seed companies that operate in Georgia were on hand showcasing their latest varieties as well as their staple varieties for Georgia and the Southeast cotton growing region.

“ST 6448GLB2 is our most popular in Georgia” states Jake Ford from Bayer CropScience. It is a full season variety with stacked genes for resistance to glyphosate and glufosinate (Liberty) as well as having Bollgaurd II technology. Ford explains that they “expect to see lots of ST 6448GLB2 next year” as well.

Bo Mathis, with Dow AgroSciences, said “PHY 499 WRF is our flagship variety in Georgia and the Southeast. It has been the most widely planted variety in the U.S. the past two years.” PHY 499 WRF contains Dow’s WideStrike technology as well as being resistant to glyphosate. Mathis also explains about some new varieties released this year. “PHY 333 WRF is a new variety just released this year; it’s a short season variety with excellent seed vigor and high yield potential. PHY 427 WRF is our new root-knot nematode resistant variety and is in its first year also.” Mathis also mentioned that “we are very excited about the Enlist Weed Control System and look forward to demonstrating it at our upcoming Technology Tour August 12-14. You can contact your Dow AgroSciences rep for more details.”

“DP 1050 B2RF, DP 1137 B2RF, and DP 1252 B2RF are the industry standard for Georgia, Florida, and Alabama,” says Holly Walker with Monsanto. Walker explains that Monsanto also released a new root-knot nematode resistant variety DP 1454 NRB2RF. “It is a dual gene root-knot nematode resistant variety that has competitive yields with industry standards and excels in high nematode situations.” Monsanto is also getting ready to launch their new RoundUp Ready Xtend Crop System. Walker explains that varieties in this system will be “resistant to glyphosate, glufosinate, and dicamba. We expect to launch these products in 2015, pending regulatory approval.”

Erin Taylor with Winfield explains that “CG 3787 B2RF is a mid-to-full season variety we have for the Southeast. It is high yielding, has excellent fiber quality, and is easily managed.” Winfield will also have a variety in 2015 with the RoundUp Ready Xtend technology and Taylor says that they are “excited to see how it performs in Georgia. The new variety yields comparable to CG 3787 and it will be in the OVT trials next year in Alabama and Georgia.”
