Celebrating National Forage Week

Jun 23, 2023

National Forage Week, observed from June 19 to 25 each year, is a time to highlight the immense significance of forages in our lives. From grassland pastures to range lands, forages encompass the largest portion of land across the nation.

Forages are crucial for the livestock industry, providing the necessary sustenance for the production of healthy meat, milk, and wool, which contribute to our food supply.  These plants play a vital role in supporting the health of ecosystems by aiding in nutrient cycling, promoting soil health, preventing erosion, enhancing water infiltration, and fostering the growth of organic matter.

The economic impact of forages should not be underestimated, as they contribute approximately 25% to the overall economic output of agriculture. The United States has consistently produced over 100 million tons of hay annually since 1950, with hay exports exceeding 4 million metric tons in 2022. These numbers highlight the significant role of forage production in driving the economy.

The emergence of cover crops in cropping systems has expanded opportunities for forage production. Many cover crops not only serve their intended purpose but also possess excellent forage qualities. Farmers have started incorporating unconventional forage crops, such as okra, into cover crop mixes, providing additional grazing options for livestock. This diversification broadens the range of available forages and maximizes their utilization.

Efficient utilization of forages in ruminant nutrition is essential for reducing production costs and improving profitability for producers. Various preservation methods, including standing crops, hay, silage, and baleage, ensure the availability of forages year-round while maintaining their quality.

It is essential to acknowledge the vital role that forages play in supporting the ecosystems and ensuring the sustainability of agriculture and food production systems. Forages serve as the backbone of these systems, contributing to everyday lives in numerous ways.
