APHIS highlights success in African Swine Fever battle

Celebrating ASF Action Week, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture unveils its success stories in the battle against African Swine Fever (ASF).

With health at the forefront, Dr. Rosemary Sifford, the U.S. Chief Veterinary Officer, spoke on the nation's fortified defense mechanisms against foreign animal afflictions, especially with ASF's expanding global footprint.

Zone of Protection: APHIS made a significant move in 2021 by creating a safeguarded zone in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This proactive step aims at heightened biosecurity and education.

Surveillance Upgrades: Intensifying its surveillance game, APHIS undertook rigorous ASF monitoring in Puerto Rico, including sampling and boat inspections. Their exhaustive tests continue to confirm no ASF presence.

Response Strategy Refinement: With collective efforts, APHIS revamped its ASF response blueprints, promising prompt and effective actions when required.

Kansas Bio Facility: The new National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility stands as a testament to APHIS's commitment. Designed to address formidable animal diseases, it's a beacon of hope.
