Agronomist Says Wheat, Barley Crops Looking Good

Jul 31, 2020
The Manitoba Wheat and Barley Growers Association says most wheat fields are in the grain filling stage. Swathing could be happening in some of the earlier seeded fields within a couple of weeks.
"Generally the condition of the wheat crop across the province is looking about average to good, except for some of those low lying areas that were in the path of recent storms," said Agronomy Extension Specialist Mallorie Lewarne. "We're seeing that those areas are displaying symptoms of nutrient deficiency and a bit of moisture stress."
She notes grasshoppers and armyworms continue to be an issue across the province. Lewarne adds that fungicide spraying for fusarium head blight (FHB) has largely wrapped up.
"Due to wet soil conditions, a lot of it was done with spray planes. FHB symptoms are starting to show up in wheat fields and now is actually a great time to get out and check those fields. It's easier to see FHB damage when the crop hasn't completely turned yet."
Lewarne says the barley crop is also looking good and is a bit more advanced than the wheat.
