Celebrate Love with Local Farm Products
A romantic evening can be even more special when it includes elements from local farms – particularly under the current potential trade war circumstances.
Whether it’s a memorable outing, a cozy homemade dinner, or setting the perfect ambiance, there are plenty of ways to incorporate locally sourced products into a romantic celebration.
“Ontario farms touch more of our lives than most of us realize. From food and fuel to fibre, flowers and more, we produce more than 200 food and farm products in our province,” said farmer Paul Maurice, Executive Member with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA).
“From agritourism adventures or the food on the menu to the flowers and candles, it is available locally made in Ontario. It doesn’t take too much research to pull together a Valentine’s Day built with local elements — and as Ontario’s farmers, we would welcome the added support of our fellow Ontarians buying local.”
Here are a few ideas for a locally inspired romantic experience:
Flowers and romance go hand in hand. Locally grown flowers can be found at garden centres, nurseries, and florists who support local growers, offering a fresh and beautiful touch to any setting.
Local wineries, breweries, and distilleries provide a variety of beverages made from regional ingredients. Wine lovers can visit vineyards in designated wine regions, while those who prefer cider or craft beer can explore breweries using locally grown ingredients.
Preparing a meal together can be a special experience. Farmers’ markets and local grocers carry fresh ingredients, including meats, dairy, and seasonal fruits and vegetables. Look for local product labels to ensure the freshest quality.
For dessert, butter tarts are a classic Canadian treat with entire trails dedicated to them. Rural areas offer bakeries and markets where these delicious sweets can be sampled and enjoyed.
Local cheese makers offer a variety of options, from soft and creamy to aged and firm. A charcuterie board with local cheeses, paired with a favourite beverage, makes for a simple yet elegant addition to any romantic night.
Set the mood with candles made from local beeswax or soy. These natural options support local producers and add a warm glow to the evening.
A quiet getaway to another rural community can be a charming way to spend time together. Whether it’s a farmhouse stay or a small-town retreat, supporting local businesses adds a special touch to the experience.
