POET Grows Clean Energy Production

Expansion strengthens farm markets jobs and clean energy production in rural regions

POET, a leading biofuel producer, has announced a major expansion of its Shelbyville, Illinois, biofuel processing facility. The project will nearly double the plant’s bioethanol production capacity and significantly increase demand for corn grown by local farmers. The expansion reflects growing demand for clean fuels and feed products across the United States.

"By growing this facility, we're strengthening markets for local farmers, creating good-paying rural jobs, and ensuring we can meet the growing global demand for our suite of bioproducts." 

Once completed, the facility’s annual ethanol output will increase from about 98 million gallons to approximately 193 million gallons. In addition, production of dried distillers grains and corn oil will also double. These products are important livestock feed ingredients that help improve farm income and support local feed markets. 

The project will also bring economic benefits to the surrounding rural communities. About 20 new full-time jobs will be added at the facility. The plant’s expansion will increase grain purchases from nearby farms, creating more stable markets during a period when many farmers are facing low commodity prices. Stable grain demand helps protect farm income and supports long-term farm planning.

The expanded facility will be positioned to take advantage of new and emerging market opportunities. These include growth in higher ethanol fuel blends, expanding feed product demand, and future clean energy solutions such as carbon capture. Together, these opportunities support both environmental goals and economic growth in rural regions. 

Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2026. The project is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2027. During this time, the facility will continue to operate while improvements are made to increase capacity and efficiency. 

This expansion highlights the continued importance of biofuels in supporting clean energy production, strengthening agricultural markets, and creating rural employment. By investing in advanced biofuel infrastructure, POET is helping meet growing fuel demand while also providing new opportunities for farmers and rural communities.
