NPPC Supports USDA Efforts to Address Proposition 12 Challenges

Brooke Rollins confirmed as USDA Secretary pledges to fix Prop 12

The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) has expressed support for newly confirmed U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Brooke Rollins, appreciating her commitment to addressing the issues caused by California’s Proposition 12. 

During her confirmation hearing, Rollins acknowledged that Prop. 12 affects not just California but also impacts pork producers and farm operations across the country. She assured the industry that she would work closely with Congress to find solutions that support American hog farmers. 

NPPC President Lori Stevermer, a pork producer from Easton, Minnesota, congratulated Rollins and highlighted the importance of her leadership. She emphasized the need for reasonable agricultural policies that ensure farm families can pass their operations to future generations. 

Prop. 12 sets strict housing requirements for breeding pigs, affecting pork producers across the U.S. The law’s impact has raised concerns about increased production costs and market restrictions, prompting industry leaders to seek federal intervention. 

Beyond Prop. 12, the NPPC aims to collaborate with Secretary Rollins on additional pork industry priorities. These include the 2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, federal pork purchases, U.S. pork export promotion, and foreign animal disease prevention. 

The pork industry remains hopeful that Rollins’ leadership at the USDA will bring necessary policy changes that support fair trade, sustainable farming, and the long-term success of American pork producers.
