Citizen affidavit alleges unsafe transport caused pig deaths and suffering

An animal welfare organization has taken legal action following a deadly livestock transport crash in Ohio. In January 2026, Animal Partisan filed a private citizen affidavit in an Ohio municipal court. The filing alleges criminal animal cruelty by against the producer farm which were selling the pigs, after a truck carrying pigs overturned on a highway on ramp.

The crash occurred in June 2024 on a ramp connecting State Route 49 and Interstate 70 in Ohio. The truck was transporting an estimated 180 to 200 pigs. Reports indicate that between 80 and 100 pigs died because of the crash. Shipping documents listed JBS as the packer for the load.

According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety crash report, the driver was speeding at the time of the accident and was cited for failing to maintain reasonable control of the vehicle.

The affidavit relies on police body camera footage obtained by the advocacy group. The footage reportedly shows injured pigs at the crash scene and captures animal distress following the accident.

Ohio law allows private citizens to request criminal charges directly from a judge, and this process has been used in other notable cases.

This is not the group’s first action related to the incident. In December, it also filed a complaint with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, requesting an investigation into how authorities handled this crash and a similar livestock transport accident in 2023.

The case has renewed discussion about animal welfare, driver accountability, and safety standards in livestock transportation.
