The Doerksen Siblings Won at Alberta's Regional Farming Event
The Doerksen brothers, Daniel, Lorin, and Barry, have been named Alberta's Outstanding Young Farmers for 2024.
This prestigious recognition was announced during the Alberta region’s recognition event, which coincided with activities at Olds College from July 31 to August 1.
Originating from Gem, Alberta, the brothers are fourth-generation farmers who, along with their father Arno and uncle Tim, manage a mixed farming operation.
Their farm includes a substantial amount of irrigated land dedicated to growing cash and forage crops, essential for their winter feed and silage production.
This diversified farming approach helps sustain their commercial and purebred cattle operations, featuring Hereford and Red Angus breeds.
The focus on longevity and fertility in their cattle breeding has allowed them to develop a strong line of bulls and bred heifers, which they offer for sale each year.
In 2018, they expanded their business model to include direct marketing of grass-finished beef under their brand, Gemstone Grass Fed Beef.
This venture enables them to sell their beef directly to consumers at locations such as their food kiosk at Calgary Farmers Market West and through their online platform.
Their commitment to sustainable and regenerative farming practices has not only enhanced their product quality but also aligned with modern agricultural trends focused on environmental stewardship.
The recognition event was graced by Alberta Agriculture Minister RJ Sigurdson, underscoring the government's support for innovative farming techniques.
The Outstanding Young Farmers' program, which celebrates farmers under 39 who earn most of their income from on-farm sources, highlights the significant contributions of young farmers to Canadian agriculture.
With national sponsors like Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and John Deere, the program supports and promotes the agricultural achievements across the country.
As they prepare for the national competition in Lethbridge later this year, the Doerksen brothers continue to serve as role models for sustainable farming in Canada.
Their practices demonstrate a successful integration of traditional farming methods with innovative, sustainable strategies, ensuring a vibrant future for the next generation of Canadian farmers.
