OFRF launches national survey to guide organic agriculture needs

The Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF) has launched the 2025-2026 National Organic Farmer Survey, a major effort to understand what organic and transitioning farmers need most. The nationwide survey will remain open through January 31, 2026, and its findings will guide research, education programs, and policy development that support organic agriculture in the United States.

OFRF has supported organic producers since 1990, focusing on farmer-led input to help shape programs, funding priorities, and Extension services. Information collected through earlier surveys, including the well-known 2022 National Organic Research Agenda, helped researchers, universities, and policymakers better target resources to organic producers.

“Organic farmers are experts in their fields, and their perspectives must guide decisions about agricultural research, education, and policy,” said Brise Tencer, executive director of OFRF. “This survey ensures that investments in the organic sector reflect the real needs of producers on the ground.” The new survey continues this approach by inviting certified and in-transition organic farmers nationwide to contribute their experiences.

The survey takes about 25 minutes to complete. All participants will receive a discount code to Johnny’s Selected Seeds and may enter to win prizes, including Muck Boot Company boots, FELCO pruners, and a consultation with an experienced organic farming professional.

Researchers stress the importance of farmer feedback. Dr. Alex Woodley from North Carolina State University shared that survey results help identify real-world challenges and justify research funding. “Getting a pulse on what farmers need right now is something we don’t always know,” he noted.

Farmers can request access by emailing OFRF, and the survey is available in English and Spanish. Paper copies are also provided upon request. Those interested can also review the 2022 NORA report for previous findings.
