Campaign aims to elevate public awareness and trust in the food system

The national campaign "Canada’s Food System: Our Food. Our Future" was launched with the backing of the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity (CCFI) and a coalition of industry partners, that are seeking to elevate public awareness and trust in the food system by reminding Canadians of its vital contributions—not only to the economy but also to national unity and sustainability.

“At a time when Canada is navigating economic recovery, global trade uncertainties, and climate pressures, this campaign reframes the food system as more than infrastructure—it’s a cornerstone of our future,” said Keith Currie, President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture.

According to Currie, the food system supports over 2 million jobs and adds more than $140 billion to Canada’s GDP, positioning the country as the fifth-largest exporter of agriculture and agri-food products globally.

There are export targets of $75 billion by 2025.  The campaign reinforces the industry’s key role in bolstering Canada’s economic standing on the world stage.

Jean-Marc Ruest, Senior Vice-President at Richardson International, emphasized the sector’s unifying role: “Canada’s food system is more than the sum of its parts—it’s a national strength that cuts across geography, language, and economy.”

Central to the campaign is the Canada’s Food System Pledge—a public call to action encouraging Canadians to show support for the farmers, fishers, processors, scientists, and transporters who bring food from field to table. The pledge is designed to foster a sense of shared pride and solidarity across the country.

Mia Parker, Director of Environmental Performance & Certification at Mowi Canada West, highlighted how innovation is shaping the future of food: “From plant science and precision agriculture to sustainable aquaculture and food processing, ours is one of the most innovative sectors in the country.”

The campaign will showcase stories of leadership, sustainability, and progress within the agri-food sector—spotlighting individuals and businesses that exemplify Canada’s strengths in food production and processing.

“This is a story we can all share,” said Lisa Bishop-Spencer, Executive Director at the CCFI. “It’s about trust, progress, and pride in what we grow, create, and contribute together.”

The initiative is part of a larger effort to build public trust and transparency in the Canadian food system, a mission shared by industry leaders across the agriculture and agri-food landscape.

Canadians are encouraged to learn more and sign the pledge.
