On Jan. 21, 1909, Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier and members of his cabinet listened to Governor General Albert Grey (pictured above) deliver a throne speech to begin the first session of Canada’s 11th Parliament.
During his speech, Grey spoke of Canada’s role in helping establish the International Institute of Agriculture in 1905.
“It is gratifying to note that, among the 48 (countries) adhering to the Institute, recognition of Canada’s agricultural importance was shown by election of our representatives to some of the highest offices of the Institute,” he said.
After the Second World War, the Institute handed over its assets and mandate to the Food and Agriculture Organization.
