Eating hundreds of broken cherry pits in one sitting could be dangerous.

The pits of several stone fruits contain cyanogenic glycosides, which are naturally occurring chemicals that can release small amounts of cyanide as the body metabolizes them.

But “the concentration of the toxin is so low that the amount available in a normal serving does not usually pose a risk for toxicity,” the Missouri Poison Center said.
