KLA: Kansas Producers Attend Advocacy Training

Farmers and ranchers from across Kansas gathered this week in Topeka for an in-depth training on how to be advocates for agriculture. Ten industry leaders representing KLA, the Kansas Pork Association, Kansas Wheat, Kansas Corn, the Kansas Grain Sorghum Producers Association, the Kansas Soybean Association and the Kansas Soybean Commission participated in the two-day event. Mark and Cindy Smith of Sharon Springs and Mark Harms of Lincolnville represented KLA. Communications staff from each association, including KLA’s Todd Domer and Scarlett Hagins, led the training.

Staff members highlighted the various communication outlets that can be used by producers to spread positive, factual information about food production. A session was conducted on using social media networks, such as Facebook, Twitter and blog sites, to reach consumers on a global level. Another focused on telling the ag industry story through proactive and reactive letters to the editor. In addition, WIBW-Topeka farm broadcasters Kelly Lenz and Greg Akagi helped train producers to convey a positive message through television and radio interviews.

During the event, participants also heard from acting Kansas Secretary of Ag Josh Svaty and Center for Food Integrity Director of Development Kevin Sprouse. Svaty explained the importance of the agriculture industry to the state’s economy. Sprouse highlighted the increasing attacks from animal activist on food production. He said producers must continue to build consumer confidence in the U.S. food system by sharing their story and correcting misinformation about the ag industry.
