Women in Agriculture: Minister Sigurdson

Mar 11, 2025

“On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the incredible Alberta women who are pushing boundaries and making a big impact in our agriculture industry.

“Today, one in three Alberta farm operators are women. They work on farms and ranches with their families doing whatever it takes to get the job done – managing accounts, breeding prize winning livestock, harvesting crops and so many other jobs that make their operations a success.

“The same goes for other parts of the industry with women in agriculture leading research, working in agriculture-related fields and volunteering their support to initiatives that promote and build the agriculture industry.

“Based on the 2021 Census of Agriculture, 18,525 of Alberta’s farm operators were women, up 4.3 per cent compared to 2016, and Alberta had the largest proportion of female farm operators at 32.4 per cent, followed by Ontario at 31.0 per cent and Saskatchewan at 27.2 per cent.

“Women have always significantly contributed to agriculture in our province and the world. Day-by-day the stereotype that farmers are male is being erased, thanks to the passion, hard work and ingenuity of women and we’re pleased it’s finally leading to more recognition for the important role they play in advancing agriculture.

“We look forward to sharing highlights about some women over the coming year to demonstrate the pivotal role of women in agriculture.
