Bayer introduces Vyconic soybeans in Canada

These soybeans represent a leap in weed control

Bayer is bringing a new soybean variety to Canadian farmers.

Vyconic soybeans is a new trait technology providing growers with tolerance to multiple herbicide active ingredients.

“It’s the industry’s first soybean trait to have herbicide tolerance to five different herbicides,” David Kikkert, Canada corn and soybean portfolio lead, told Farms.com.

Vyconic soybeans are resistant to:

• Dicamba (Group 4)
• Glufosinate (Group 10)
• Mesotrione (Group 27)
• 2,4-D (Group 4)
• Glyphosate (Group 9)

And it will include maturity groups ranging from 000 to sevens.

This package will ensure farmers have the protection and flexibility they need to maximize yields, Kikkert says.

“It gives growers options when managing weeds, timing, and how they might want to mix different crop protection products together,” he said. “Growers can get a good start and be in a good position to manage their crop in-season depending on what weeds they may see.”

Bayer is currently evaluating pre-commercial plots of Vyconic in Ontario and the U.S. over checks, which are Roundup Ready Xtend and XtendFlex.

Vyconic is showing some yield advantages, Kikkert said, adding that more test plots across Canada will be planted this year.

Growers will have to be patient before using Vyconic on their farms.

Bayer estimates the soybean trait will be available for farmers by the 2027 growing season following regulatory approvals.
