Wheat Harvest Coming in a Bit Slower Than Expected, As US Corn Planting Just About Wrapped Up

According to the USDA Crop Progress Report for this week, released Monday, June 04, 2018 - the US corn crop is rated at 78 percent good to excellent, 19 fair and 3 percent poor to very poor. Corn planted has reached 97 percent complete and emerged is slightly above average at 86 percent. The US soybean crop condition rates 75 percent good to excellent, 21 fair and 4 poor to very poor. Soybean planted reached 87 percent complete this week, well above the average of 75, while emerged is also ahead of schedule at 68 percent complete, compared to 52 for the five-year average. Meanwhile, the US wheat harvest continues this week in the Southern Plains with this year’s harvest reported at 5 percent complete, just 1 point ahead of the average but 4 points behind last year. The winter wheat crop’s condition nationwide this week rates 37 good to excellent, 28 fair and 35 poor to very poor.

In Oklahoma, winter wheat harvested reached 7 percent, down 2 points from normal. Wheat’s condition rates this week at 11 percent good to excellent, 26 fair and 63 poor to very poor. Canola coloring reached 90 percent, down 4 points from the previous year and down 1 point from normal. Canola harvested reached 1 percent. Corn emerged reached 89 percent, up 4 points from the previous year. Sorghum planted reached 51 percent, unchanged from the previous year. Soybeans planted reached 58 percent, up 17 points from the previous year. Soybeans emerged reached 30 percent, up 5 points from the previous year. Cotton planted reached 60 percent, down 7 points from the previous year but up 10 points from normal. Conditions of pasture and range were rated at 82 percent good to fair.

In Kansas, winter wheat condition rates 16 percent very poor, 33 poor, 35 fair, 15 good, and 1 excellent. Winter wheat headed was 96 percent, near 99 last year and 97 for the five-year average. Coloring was 48 percent, behind 59 last year, but ahead of 43 average. Mature was 3 percent. Corn condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 36 fair, 48 good, and 10 excellent. Corn planted was 97 percent, ahead of 89 last year, and near 94 average. Emerged was 90 percent, ahead of 74 last year and 80 average. Soybean condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 37 fair, 52 good, and 5 excellent. Soybeans planted was 79 percent, well ahead of 56 last year and 50 average. Emerged was 61 percent, well ahead of 37 last year and 31 average. Sorghum planted was 36 percent, ahead of 23 last year and 28 average. Cotton condition rated 0 percent very poor, 0 poor, 34 fair, 64 good, and 2 excellent. Cotton planted was 77 percent, ahead of 59 last year, and well ahead of 48 average. Pasture and range conditions rated 6 percent very poor, 18 poor, 44 fair, 30 good, and 2 excellent.
