The Iowa Learning Farms (ILF) conservation webinar taking place April 16, at noon CDT will feature Wesley Everman, extension weed specialist and assistant professor, Iowa State University. Everman conducts applied research with a sprinkle of basic research to answer pertinent challenges facing Iowa farmers. Primary areas of research topics center on managing herbicide-resistant weed species with integrated weed management practices that take pressure off herbicides while remaining economically viable.

In the webinar, “Challenges in Our Weed Management Decisions,” Everman will provide an overview of common weed species and the challenges farmers face in controlling them in typical cropping systems. He will discuss the pros and cons of weed control practices commonly used and highlight the importance of implementing a weed management plan. Everman will also devote some time to novel weed management practices on the horizon – or newly introduced.

“Everyone has weeds,” said Everman. “How we respond to weed control is the fundamental issue. Weed management is most effective when we take time to develop and stick to a weed management plan that is aligned with cropping systems and production goals.”
