USDA Crop Progress Report: Corn 34% Planted.

May 02, 2017

From USDA News             www.USDA.gov

The weekly Crop Progress Report was released by USDA Monday and farmers made strong planting progress ahead of the widespread rainfall last week across much of the cornbelt.

U.S. corn planting pulled even with the five year average last week, at 34% complete. Most of that was likely done ahead of the widespread heavy weekend rainfall, flooding, and cooler temperatures in parts of the Midwest. Next week’s reports should give a fuller picture of the slowdown in planting and possible damage. 9% of corn has emerged, slightly ahead of normal.

10% of soybeans are planted, compared to 7% typically this time of year.

54% of winter wheat is in good to excellent condition, unchanged on the week, and 42% of the crop has headed, compared to 34% on average. 31% of spring wheat is planted, compared to 46% on average, and 9% has emerged, compared to the usual pace of 17%.

Snowfall and cold weather in Kansas may degrade the crop ratings in next week's report.

As of Sunday, the USDA says 28% of U.S. topsoil and 21% of subsoil have surplus levels of moisture.
