Urgent call for action on farm bill and government funding

Sep 29, 2023

In a united move, over 20 organizations from diverse sectors of the food and agriculture industry have reached out to Congress. Their collective voice is urging for action to sidestep a government shutdown and bring the farm bill into the spotlight.

A letter, addressed to the leadership of the House and Senate, calls for a bipartisan stance on the ongoing appropriations process. The emphasis is on the necessity to act swiftly and decisively, especially considering the looming expiration of the integral farm bill.

The plea to Congress is clear and concise: A bipartisan way forward is essential to dodge a government shutdown and tackle federal government funding issues promptly. Time is of the essence, with a limited number of days left on this year’s congressional calendar. Initiating discussions and ensuring the passage of the farm bill before the onset of the 2024 presidential election cycle is of paramount importance.

A revised and up-to-date farm bill is a necessity for farmers and ranchers. Although the existing bill from 2018 has served its purpose, the landscape has evolved, necessitating a reevaluation and substantial investments. This is vital for maintaining the safety net for farm and ranch families, addressing the current challenges and needs of the agricultural world.

The collaboration of these various organizations highlights the critical nature of the farm bill and the urgency of the situation. With the well-being of the agricultural community at stake, a prompt and collaborative resolution is crucial for the future of the industry.
